Description

Rail freight company DB Schenker Rail UK has announced plans to cut 234 jobs across the United Kingdom. The company has said that the reduction in its workforce is required because of a decline in the amount of coal being transported on the UK rail network. A formal 90 day consultation period has commenced with affected staff and RMT, Aslef and TSSA unions. The company is headquartered in Doncaster with sites in Carlisle, Warrington, Worksop, Gateshead and Teeside. A spokesperson from Aslef – the union which represents train drivers - has said that redundancies among clerical and depot staff are likely to be unavoidable. The Aslef spokesperson also made reference to a three-year no compulsory redundancy clause contained in contracts of 188 train drivers, meaning that if the company wanted to reduce the number of train drivers, it would have to explore other avenues such as voluntary redundancy and relocation The company will not confirm which jobs and locations will be affected until conclusion of the consultation period.
