Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Supermarket chain Sainsbury's has announced that it is to cut 800 jobs. The cuts will affect managerial staff as department and deputy manager positions are set to be axed. The move follows similar changes by the company's main competitors Morrisons, Asda and Tesco. Sainsbury's has said that it expects further difficult times ahead as it announced that like for like sales had fallen for the fifth consecutive quarter. In November 2014 Sainsbury's outlined plans to save 500 million GBP as part of a three year plan. These latest cuts are part of that wider plan. It is being reported that consultation with affected employees has begun at more than one hundred sites, though the exact timescale for the latest job cuts is not yet known.
