Description

Private provider of probation services Sodexo has announced plans to cut 700 jobs over the next twelve months.

The job cuts are understood to be part of a cost-cutting measure which will allow offenders to report in using a cash-machine kiosk, rather than reporting to a probation officer. It is understood that the majority of redundancies will occur from September and will be on a compulsory basis. Sodexo has said that it will not honour a voluntary redundancy scheme which was agreed between the Justice Secretary and the unions at the time of the privatisation in February. Given the numbers which are involved in the redundancies a formal consultation will take place.

The company operates 6 of the 21 newly privatised community rehabilitation companies in England and Wales.
