Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Cash and carry chain Makro is to cut some 229 jobs in Portugal, affecting about 19% of its workforce, by the end of the year. In a first phase job cuts will be carried out by means of voluntary departures. The remaining ones will be cut through collective dismissals. The resizing of its ten stores is the main reason for the collective dismissal. Makro management claims it will offer more favourable compensations than the law requires. The company also will create an outplacement programme that will help workers to find a job. Health and life insurance coverage will remain active until the end of the year. This is the company's third collective dismissal in the last six years in Portugal.
