Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
French energy company, Technip has announced plans to close its offshore wind business. Following a review of operations, the closure of this part of their business will take place once current projects have been completed and will result in the loss of 190 jobs.
In terms of where the job losses are located, more than 70 positions will be lost at the company’s headquarters in Westhill, Aberdeenshire in Scotland, a further 20 jobs will go from Gateshead, near Newcastle and the remainder of jobs will be lost from offshore and contractor jobs. The company is currently involved in consultation with the workers who are affected by the closure. The UK-based offshore wind business was set up in 2011, targeting the EPC market although its main focus was on cable installation.
