Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Pharmaceutical company, Almac will create 348 new jobs in Northern Ireland. The roles include 141 new jobs in the division of the company that provides contract development and manufacturing. These jobs have been created to support demand for the outsourced development services of the firm. An additional 181 new jobs will be created in clinical services; an area of the business that provides packaging, labelling and logistics services to the pharmaceutical industry. A further 26 new highly skilled jobs will be created in support functions such as IT and engineering.
The business expansion will take place across the next five years and has received financial support via a grant from Northern Ireland’s government, with NI Invest providing a grant of £5.5 million, adding to the company’s investment of £54 million. The global headquarters of the company is located in Craigavon in County Armagh, currently employing 3,300 workers in Northern Ireland. Almac has been one of Northern Ireland’s most successful exporters, with the vast majority of its sales made to companies outside of the United Kingdom. For earlier expansion see Almac-UK2009.
