American wireless modem maker Broadcom is to cut 600 jobs in Finland. Out of these, 430 refer to Broadcom's plant in Oulu that will close. There is yet no information about the timeline of the restructuring but negotiations between the unions and the employer are ongoing and will end on the 6th of August.    

At this time, 300 employees have been fired from the plant in Oulu with another 130 people waiting to be terminated. There has been no update regarding the exact location of the other 170 jobs that will be affected by the restructuring, but it is assumed that the job reduction will affect the entire Finnish operation located in Helsinki, Salo and Tempere, in addition to the site in Oulu. As reported, redundant workers have received a Broadcom support package which according to some employees is lower than what they have previously received from other employers, leading to further disappointment seeing as how Broadcom is still a profitable company.

Broadcom is an American owned global fabless semiconductor company in the broadband communication business and employs over 11,000 people.

Finland applied for EGF (European Global adjustment funds) on 30/01/2015. The EGAF fund granted EUR 1,365,000 to provide for 500 workers and included:

• coaching and other preparatory measures;
• personalised coaching and services;
• training and re-training;
• guidance towards entrepreneurship;
• start-up grant;
• enterprise surveys and visits;
• some subsidies and allowances.
