Description

German global discount supermarket chain, Lidl has announced that 2,500 jobs will be created by the end of 2014 due to the opening of twenty new stores. The parent company Schwartz Group has said that the expansion of the UK business will see the number of stores in the UK increase from 600 to 620 stores by year end. A wide range of new jobs will be created across the UK stores, including new roles in the company's UK headquarters, located in Wimbledon. The company has a longer-term goal of opening 1,500 stores in the UK.

Discount supermarkets such as Lidl and Aldi have grown market share, placing considerable pressure on other major UK supermarkets such as Tesco, Sainsbury, Morrisons and Asda, some of whom have recently announced plans of job losses due to internal restructuring of their stores.
