King's College London has announced plans to make redundant 120 staff across the three health schools (Medicine, Biomedical Sciences and the Institute of Psychiatry). The move is part of a bid to cut staff costs in these functions by 10pc in order to make more funds available for a £400 million infrastructure project.
Redundancy decisions will be based on resarch grant income and teaching hours. It is expected that notices will be issued by 15th August 2014. As reported, the University has not engaged in any prior consultation with employees or students; the 45 day legal minimum to contest these proposals applies.
The Higher Education Union UCU has responded by announcing that it is to ballot staff at the institution (not just in the departments affected) on industrial action. The ballot opens on June 6th and closes on June 25th.
