Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Medical equipment manufacturer Baxter Malta, a subsidiary of the American healthcare company Baxter International Inc., announced that it will be hiring 190 new employees by the end of August 2014. Out of these 190 jobs, 30 will be in the field of research and development and the remaining 160 will be working on production lines.
The company will expand its facilities in Malta as part of a capital investment program supported by government incentives. In 2013 Baxter cut 97 jobs and had plans to relocate its production lines to Tunisia due to lower costs (factsheet 23853).
Baxter Malta is a subsidiary of the US based corporation, Baxter International Inc., which in 2013 recorded sales of $15.3 billion and operates in more than 100 countries. The firm employs some 61,500 workers worldwide.
