Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Haltik, a government ICT agency, has announced up to 60 redundancies of its 440 employees. The agency has started mandatory negotiations with employee representatives on the proposed cuts.
Haltik (Hallinnon tietotekniikkakeskus) provides ICT services mainly to the Interior Ministry, police, rescue services, border control and immigration services. Cuts in public expenditure, particularly in the Interior Ministry, were given by the agency as the reason to seek savings of €3.5 million. Haltik has its headquarters in Rovaniemi, but it has also personnel in 28 additional locations. The agency plans to conclude negotiations by the end of April; by law they have to last at least 6 weeks.
A union representative criticised the proposed cuts and noted that while saving needs have been known since 2012, the agency has kept hiring more employees.
