Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
German energy provider RWE is to cut at least 2,350 jobs in Germany by 2016. The company suffers from declining electricity prices and faces a low utilization of gas and coal power stations.
The measure is part of a plan to cut 6,750 positions worldwide within the same timeframe. This includes the larger part of the at least 3,000 EU-wide job cuts in the power generation section announced in September, and likely also the 2,400 job cuts in Germany announced in 2012. Together with the latter measure, total reduction of job cuts in Germany amounts to 4,750 until 2016.
The company is to engage in talks with worker representatives in the beginning of 2014. Until the end of 2014, a collective agreement ensures dismissal protection in Germany, so RWE aims to avoid forced redundancies.
