Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
On 25 June 2013, the lighting company Tridonic (owned by the Austrian group Zumtobel) has announced plans to close its production plant in Fürstenfeld by the end of 2013, making 102 employees redundant. The company produces magnetic ballasts for fluorescent tubes which are considered outdated, hence the decision to close the site. In Tridonic, the number of staff has been continually decreasing in the last few years; social plans have been developed. The remaining factories will focus on LED technology.
Update, 21-01-2014:
The closure of the company has been delayed and will be in effect at the end of April 2014. A social plan has been agreed upon. Reportedly, this plan includes redundancy payments above the legal minimum and the establishment of a foundation that is to provide training for the dismissed workers.
