Description

The steel production joint-venture Duferco-NLMK announced its intention to cut 601 jobs in the plant of La Louvière.

Upon the announcement of this decision the workers reacted by blocking the entrance to the plant and called for temporary work stoppage. The unions stated they did not expect such a radical measure and that they will try to save as many jobs as possible. At the moment there is no official announcement regarding the possibility of a strike.

According to the management, the dismissals are necessary in order to reduce costs and remain competitive.

Updated, 27-09-2013: The Belgian authorities have applied for aid from the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF).
