Description
Belgian steel producer Carsid, member of the Duferco group, annouced the final closure of its plant in Marcinelle with the subsequent loss of 1,000 jobs. Another 3,000 jobs could be at risk indirectly through the closure.
The plant has been economically inactive for more than 40 month and workers were kept on temporary "chômage économique" (economic unemployment), i.e. the company could not operate due to economic reasons and workers received federal unemployment benefit. It was hoped that the plant would open again.
Now that the closure is definite, the Renault procedure has been launched.
