Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Crown Holdings, specialised in the manufacturing of product packaging, announced plans to close their plant in Deurne (Anvers), leading to the loss of 322 jobs.
According to the management of the company, the costs of the factory are too high and it is difficult to compete with Eastern European competitors. This is reflected in the fact that production decreased more than 40% in the last five years.
Currently, management and unions are in negotiations about other alternatives to the closure. It is reported that they are seeking to find companies that would be interested in taking over the production site and its workers.
