On 7 December 2011 chip producer NXP announced a new round of restructuring. NXP announced it will close down two plants it considers outdated, resulting in the loss of 300 jobs. The majority of the production will be relocated to a more modern plant in Nijmegen, some of the production will be offshored to Hamburg.
Five years ago the firm employed more than 6000 people. The company has undergone major restructuring since then, having announced a worldwide restructuring programme affecting 4500 jobs in 2008 (see here).
NXP has announced that the existing social plan (dating from 2009) will be used for the announced restructuring and the company will facilitate educational training for the employees concerned. The unions have criticized the measures announced.
NXP currently employs about 3500 people, of which 2000 are located in Nijmegen.
