Description

As part of its restructuring plan, Portuguese railway maintenance company EMEF (Empresa de Manutenção de Equipamento Ferroviário) is to dismiss 203 workers in 2012 and 180 workers in 2013. EMEF is a subsidiary of railways operator Comboios de Portugal (CP) and as such it will be affected by the CP's internal restructuring process.

These redundancies are part of a larger restructuring process in Lisbon's transport sector. Other companies have announced redundancies adding up to about 2000 job cuts: Carris announced 635 redundancies (see here); CP - Combois de Portugal announced 725 job cuts (see here) and Metropolitano de Lisboa (Lisbon underground) will dismiss 364 people (see here).

UPDATE, 13/01/2012 - According to latest news, EMEF will close its branch in Barreiro, resulting in hundreds of redundancies. The closure will take place in two stages with some 140 and 150 job losses. Diesel engines maintenance operations and repairs will be transferred to Poceirao, where 20 staff will work on maintenance and 25 on repairs.
