Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Ahlstrom Glassfibre has announced redundancies of up to 230 workers in two of its units in Finland. The company starts mandatory negotiations with employee representatives on the proposed cuts.
The company is part of Ahlstrom Group, a high performance materials manufacturer. The two units are located in Karhula and Mikkeli, and they produce glassfibre, specialty reinforments, and glassfibre tissue. Ahlstrom cites as reasons increased competition in the markets and inability to to compensate for higher production costs in its selling prices. Temporary lay-offs are also considered as an option to permanent ones.
