Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Global Garden Products announced its decision to move its production from Italy to Slovakia, resulting in 230 job losses over 2 years.
Global Garden Products, one of the leading manufacturers in Europe of lawn mowers, is to move its production of 250,000 mowers (under the brand Castelgarden) from Treviso, in the North of Italy, to Slovakia. The delocalisation process will cause 160 job-losses in 2011, and 70 job-cuts in 2012.
Around 650 workers are employed in the Treviso plant. In 2010 the company made a loss of EUR 10 million. The trade unions organised protest actions against the company's decision.
