Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
On 1 July 2011, the management of Les Hospices civils de Lyon (22,000 employees) announced to its supervisory board that nearly 200 jobs among its medical staff (4,307 employees) will be cut in 2011. The hospital has to reduce its deficit from 54,3 millions euro in 2010 to 45,3 millions euro in 2011. At the same time, the hospital is recruiting 200 nursing in foreign countries to replace French nursing leaving the hospital in the frame of an early retirement scheme. The CFDT union underlines the restructuring is unsustainable with the loss of more than 1,000 employees since 2005.
