Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
US medical devices multinational Stryker has announced 142 redundancies at its Cork plant. In a statement, the manufacturer of orthopaedic implants and instruments said the company's two manufacturing facilities in Cork are to be consolidated into a single facility over the next four years.
The manufacturing of certain products in Cork will be relocated to Stryker facilities outside of Ireland. However, the company added that they expect to create approximately 60 new jobs over the next four years in the development of the company's endoscopy division. It hopes that some of the current staff will re-skill and transfer to these new posts.
Stryker has three manufacturing facilities in Ireland, two employing at total of 700 people at Carrigtwohill in Co Cork, and one in Limerick employing 500 people.
