Description

On 4 May 2011, the dairy cooperative group Sodial announced it is to close two units which employ nearly 200 employees. The closure concerns the sites in Carhaix (Finistère) and Trébillet (Ain). At Carhaix, 90 posts will go but the site will continue producing milk powder, whereas all production activities in Trébillet (97 employees) will be transferred to a plant near Annecy (around 100 km from Trébillet).

The closure of both sites results from the acquisition of the cooperative by the cheese maker Emmental Entremont. The management said that there will be a "strong incentive" for employees to move to Annecy, but as the site in Annecy is far from Trébillet, only a few employees are expected to take the offer and move to Annecy.

On 7 March 2011, the employees of Tébillet went on strike to protest against the closure that the management blamed on loss in productivity and, hence the need to reduce costs. The Works Council received information about this restructuring in March and April, and a Central Works Council will hold a meeting in mid-May.
