The Federal Insurance Office, which is in charge of supervising the statutory health insurers, announced the closure of City BKK by 1 July 2011. City BKK (Betriebskrankenkasse, BKK) is the health insurer of the cities of Hamburg and Bremen and company of the nation-wide BKK. According to Handelsblatt, Since 2009, City BKK's shaky economic position has severely been affected by a drop in young members following on an increase in insurance contributions.
The closure hits a staff of 400. Management said it has been active addressing partner organisations to provide jobs for City BKK staff. As of beginning of May, 65% of the staff is expected to be reemployed with various BKK companies or other organisations.
