Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Car manufacturer Autoeuropa announced the creation of 300 new jobs at its plant in Palmela (Setúbal) due to increasing demand. The 300 temporary workers will sign an initial contract for six months starting in April 2011. The contract extensions will depend on incoming orders for 2012 as well as workers' performance.
Part of the new orders must be delivered in August, which forced the company to negotiate compensatory measures with the workers. The traditional holiday period in August will this year be of 19 days spread over three distinct periods. An annual premium of 250€ will be paid to each worker with a minimum of eight months work.
