Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
On 3 December 2010, the business daily Handelsblatt reported the loss of around 450 jobs at MVV Energie, a public energy provider. Affected are the sites in Mannheim, Offenbach and Kiel. Management and works' councils of the single sites have agreed to avoid collective dismissals due to operational reasons until 2016. However, the reduction in staff is to be realised by natural attrition and early retirement schemes. Job cuts are part of a restructuring programme, which seeks to lower costs by 20 to 30 million euros annually.
