Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
On 26 October 2010 the large windmill manufacturer, Vestas, announced the closure of four factories in Denmark and 1919 job losses. Across Europe, Vestas will layoff close to 3000 employees in total. Layoffs arise in anticipation of a decrease in demand for wind turbines in Europe in 2011.
Factories closing in Denmark include a blade production factory in Nakskov, nacelle production factories in Skagen and Viborg, and activities at Vestas Towers in Rudkøbing. This means a total dismissal of 1,046 hourly workers and 194 monthly salaried employees. In Nakskov and Rudkøbing especially, the closures will have catastrophic effect on the employment situation in the region.
In addition, there are plans to cut the number of employees in a number of Vestas' other locations in Denmark. In Randers and Aarhus, 508 salaried employees from the staff will be fired. All in all will another 873 person be made redundant in Lem, Ringkøbing, Aarhus and Randers, or 1,919 in Denmark in total. Globally, an additional 787 employees are expected to be fired.
Vestas will now go into negotiations with the employees' representatives with the aim to find other job possibilities, vocational training and/or internal solutions that will reduce the number of lay-offs. Those who will be made redundant will be informed on 23 November 2010.
