Description

Tile manufacturer Pilkington's have announced that 251 staff have lost their jobs after the company went into administration last week. The company has sites in Dorset, Greater Manchester and Dublin; 37 staff were made redundant at the quarry in Poole on 16th June, and another 204 were added from the headquarters in Swinton, Salford. Administrators KPMG blamed the lack of demand for the cuts, but said they were hopeful some production would be able to resume following negotiations with customers, and that there is interest from potential buyers. The GMB union had previously called on the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) to try to rescue the company, but had been told it was a matter for the administrators.
