Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Forestry industry company UPM is cutting its workforce by 830 individuals. These restructuring measures concern plywood mills in Lappeenranta and Heinola, a processing mill in Parkano, and a sawmill in Heinola. The most severe cuts will be in Lappeenranta and Heinola; about 300 jobs are to be eliminated in both cities.
Before negotiations the company planned 870 job loss. Negotiations with the employees started in November 2009. Job cuts will be implemented during the first half of 2010.
The UPM plywood business currently employs around 2,450 people in Finland. The company's timber operations give work to about 900 Finns.
