Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The Austria-based Schoeller-Bleckmann Oilfield Equipment has layed off almost 100 of its 390 employees at its headquarters in Ternitz, Lower Austria, since 1 January 2009. Moreover, for half of its workforce short-time work arrangements have been concluded. These measures are part of a thorough-going restructuring programme affecting 300 employees in the USA, Austria and the UK. Restructuring has become inevitable since oilwell drilling activities have decreased worldwide due to the current global crisis. As a consequence, the demand for oilfield equipment has shrunk likewise. This was reported by the newspaper Der Standard on 19 August 2009.
