Description
Sága Foods Zrt, the major poultry product exporter of Hungary, is to dismiss 500 workers. Employees learned about the mass redundancy measure at a worker's council assembled on 15 May 2009 and affected workers were informed individually a month later. Layoffs are taking place gradually until the end of November, by when the company will have downsized from 1800 to 1300 employees.
The company, which exports its products to the UK, Germany, Italy and Austria is also the market leader in Hungary in many areas of meat production and merchandise. The company, based in Sárvár (Vas county), opened its new state of the art production and packaging facility in 2006. Since its privatization in 1993, Sága Foods Zrt. is 99,77% owned by the English Bernard Matthews BV.
