Description
Car-O-Line, an automotive industry supplier, has closed a plant in Abony, Hungary, thereby making redundant its workforce of 400.
Though there have been some instances of temporary suspension of production since the autumn 2008, workers were taken by surprise by the owner's decision to move production abroad and to close down the Hungarian production facility.
The Hungarian plant, based in Abony (Pest county) used to assemble electric cable batches for a wide variety of car producers. The company's Hungarian enterprise was established in 2000 with only 150 employees, but the plant expanded steadily over time with the workforce peaking at 470 workers. Since then the workforce has decreased to 400. Two thirds of those dismissed by the company were female employees, whilst one fifth of all those laid off are of minority origin.
