Description

Steelmaker Corus is to cut up to 2,000 jobs across the UK. The cuts are blamed on low demand for steel due to the severe impact of the recession on the British steel industry. Most of the cuts will affect staff in Scunthorpe (500), Stocksbridge (379), Rotherham (377), Teesside (150) and Hartlepool (156). Trade unions called for government intervention. As of 28 June 2009 no date has been given for the implementation of the redundancies nor any information on job reduction measures.

Update:

Corus has announced a further 366 jobs losses at Scunthorpe and that 149 jobs are under threat at Port Talbot and Llanwern.
