Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Steyr-Daimler-Puch Spezialfahrzeug (SSF), a company specialising in the production of armored vehicles, is to cut 120 of its currently 450 jobs at the headquarters in Vienna-Simmering. SSF is a company integrated in a business unit called ‘General Dynamics European Land Systems' - consisting of four European enterprises in total, which are fully owned by the US General Dynamics Corporation. The firm's main field of activities centres around design, development, production and sales of wheeled and tracked armored vehicles. According to management, the current absence of large-scale orders is forcing the company to lay off staff in order to secure the Viennese site and to remain competitive. Therefore the management has sent written notification of the planned dismissal of 120 employees to the Labour Market Service. A social plan is currently being negotiated with the works council.
