Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The Portuguese unit of the insolvent German chip maker Qimonda has announced the dismissal of 600 workers at the factory in Vila do Conde who are mainly employed on temporary contracts. However, a work council representative claims that 200 of these 600 workers have permanent contracts. The management also announced the suspension of the contracts of 800 of the remaining employees for six months. Qimonda's Portuguese unit will keep 200 workers to maintain its plant in Vila do Conde. The management also said that it is aware of the implications of this measure and, therefore, promises to avoid affecting, for example, parents with dependent children.
