Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
GKN Driveline Slovenija, which manufactures components for the automobile industry, is to make 48 employees redundant at its plant in Zrece. GKN Driveline Slovenija is a subsidiary of UK based GKN Driveline. The Slovenian subsidiary, which is located in the town of Zreče in Savinjska region, produces driveline systems and components for automobile industry. The company is faced by a 40% reduction of orders. As a result, in February the company decided not to prolong the contracts to 48 employees. Thus the employment was reduced from 380 to 332 people. All employees have permanent contracts. The company also decided to reduce working hours to 36 per week. According to a government anti-recession programme, companies may reduce the weekly working load and the government compensates the workers for their lower salaries.
