Description
Amoníacos de Portugal (a Portuguese producer of urea and ammoniac), announced the closure of its factory in Lavradio (Barreiro) with the loss of 152 jobs.
The management attributes the dismissals to the lack of competitiveness and viability of the production of urea and ammoniac in Portugal. The work council informed that the workers are willing to find alternatives to the closure with the aim of continuing production operations and saving the jobs. To this end, the workers will make new proposals to the company management as well as the Government in an effort to make the company viable. The Portuguese Farmers' Confederation (CAP) stated the company closure will pose a serious problem - urea and ammoniac will have to be imported and fertilizers prices will increase. The nitric acid and ammonium nitrate production, in addition to ammoniac logistics, will remain in activity in this cane area of Lavradio.
