Description

Benetton, one of the world leaders in fashion apparels, is to close one of its plants located at Piobesi, in the province of Turin, with the loss of 147 jobs. At the end of January 2009, the company announced a reorganisation plan that envisages the closure of Piobesi plant and the consequent delocalisation of the production to both the Vicenza plant and a new plant, which will be opened in Turkey. The trade unions reacted to the company's decision by going out on strike and organising some protests in the downtown of Turin. Benetton has around 7,000 employees worldwide.

The authorities had previously applied for aid from the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund to help workers in Piemonte.
