Shop Direct, a home shopping retailer, is to cut 1,150 jobs in north-west England. The company will close its call centre in Crosby with the loss of 1,000 jobs, while the rest will occur at company headquarters in Liverpool and sites in Preston and Manchester. The closure of the call centre is part of the company's plans to enhance its online business. The company will enter a 90-day consultation period with the employees and unions. As of 28 January 2009 there is no information on when the job losses will occur.
