Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
E.On, an energy firm, is to cut 450 jobs across the UK. 40 of the jobs will occur in Lanarkshire with the closure of the firm's call cente, while the remaining job losses will occur in its plants in Coventry, Nottingham and in Dudley area. The cuts are part of wider internal restructuring plans in order to maintain a sustainable retail business and aim to compensate for the company loss in retail for the past two years. The firm hopes to keep compulsory redundancies to a minimum by considering alternative options. As of 29 January 2009 there is no information on when the job losses will be implemented by.
