Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
In July 2008, Sony Ericsson announced that they were to implement a savings plan with the goal of decreasing expenses worth of EUR300 million a year. At the same time the company announced a redundancy of 2,000 employees of a total of 12,000 in the world. In October 2008, it stood clear that 870 of the employees at the three sites in Sweden (Hässle-holm, Lund and Kista) were affected and given notice. In December, the results from the negotiations were presented. Lund is the company's largest site in Sweden, with a total of 3,100 employees (and 1400 external consultants, who will lose their contract with Sony Ericsson). After negotiations, 50 out of 230 planned redundancies will take place in Lund. In Hasselholm, 75 employees will be transferred to the site of Lund. However, 15 will be dismissed. In Kista, out of 1100 employees (including external consultants), 400 will lose their positions.
