Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
A major household and historical name in the Irish drinks sector, Cork-based Beamish and Crawford, announced 120 job losses, and the subsequent closure of a plant where brewing has been carried on since 1690. The move follows the acquisition of Beamish’s parent company, Scottish and Newcastle, by Heineken, which owns the other major Cork brewery. About 40 of the current workforce are due to transfer to the Heineken site, which is less than one mile away. Beamish stout is the main product at the factory.
A Heineken statement said the closure followed a review of both individual brewing operations, with particular focus on capacity, expansion capability and future investment. This, it said, combined with the high costs of operating two breweries in the city, made the future of the plant unsustainable.
