Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Olivetti, one of the leading Italian Information Technology company, is to close its plant located at Agliè, in the province of Turin, with the loss of 260 jobs. The company has announced that the production may be relocated to its plant located at Arnad in the province of Aosta.
The trade unions reacted to the company’s decision by going on strike and trying to involve the local authorities in order to avoid the closure of the Agliè plant.
At the end of November 2008, the company and the trade unions reached an agreement on the reorganisation plan. The agreement envisages:
· the recourse to the 'Extraordinary Wages Guarantee Fund' (Cassa Integrazione Guadagni Straordinaria, CIGS) for seven months. More information about the CIGS is available in a thematic feature on the European Industrial Relations Observatory (EIRO);
· the company will provide further economic support to affected workers who will be involved in the CIGS scheme;
· new investments in high-tech products with a view to increasing the production and, consequently, reducing the job cuts envisaged by the plan (260 redundancies).
Olivetti has become a company of the Telecom Italia group since August 2003. It has five research centres in Italy and Switzerland, two production facilities and an international sales network covering 83 countries, with an overall workforce of 1,260 employees.
