Description

Aldi, the German supermarket chain, is to create 650 jobs across Ireland over the next three years. The company is to open 35 new stores nationwide where 490 jobs will be created; the other 160 jobs will be located at a new distribution depot to be based in Mitchelstown, Co. Cork where building is due to start in March 2009

Aldi has been operating in the country since 1999 and it currently has 59 stores with two more due to open by the end of November.

It is significant that the German-owned company is expanding when the Irish economy has entered a serious economic downturn. Aldi presents a competitive challenge to other retailers operating in Ireland; primarily because customers are attracted by its lower cost products.
