European Restructuring Monitor (ERM)
The restructuring events database contains factsheets with data on large-scale restructuring events reported in the principal national media and company websites in each EU Member State. This database was created in 2002.
Elan, the largest Slovenian producer of sports equipment with two main production programmes – skis, skiboards and yachts, is to cut 180 jobs. Elan is owned by Slovenian group Skimar and is located in Begunje in North-West of Slovenia, and employs 800 people. In the recent years the company has entered into problems because of “green winters” which reduced the demand for skis, while the present recession also reduces the demand for yachts. As a consequence, Elan will reduce its labour force by more than 20%. Part of the reduction will be achieved through early retirements, internal relocations of workers and reduction of the existing level of outsourcing. Nonetheless, there will also be direct dismissals.
The latest information of 2009-08-24 says that until end August 2009, Elan laid off only 50 people out of 180 dissmisals planned in 2008. However, due to further aggravation of the situation in the company, the number of employees will be reduced to 500 by the end of 2009, i.e. altogether 300 people did and will lose jobs during the process of company restructuring.
