Description
Freescale Semiconductor, a multinational high technology engineering firm, has announced that it is to close its microchip factory in East Kilbride. The factory opened in 1969, but will be closed in Spring 2009 with the loss of all 800 jobs. The company blamed the closure of the plant on a reduction in demand for the products made at East Kilbride, mainly used in mobile telephones and car engines, as a result of advances in technology.
