Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Ifö Sanitär produces bathroom and kitchen sanitary solutions in Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Russia, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Ifö Sanitär is part of the Finnish group Sanitec, a leading stakeholder on the European bathroom market. As part of a restructuring process that has been going on for many years, Ifö Sanitär is now phasing out its old manual production and, at the same time, building a new automated production unit at the factory in Bromölla. During a period of five months starting in November 2008, 43 jobs will be lost at the manual production department. At the same time 22 jobs will be created at the new unit. It is, according to the company information department, not possible for the management to re-train the existing personnel since the new production type is very different and required completely different skills. Hence, the solution with both reduction and creation of jobs.
