Description

Estradas de Portugal (EP), the Portuguese agency responsible for administering the roads in Portugal, has announced the loss of 345 jobs (around 20% of its current workforce) by the end of 2008. Most of those who will lose their job are older workers: 36 are older than 65 years old, another 30 are aged 60 to 65 years old and over 273 are aged 55 to 60 years old.

However, the final decision about the workers to be dismissed depends on the opinion of the direct superior. Therefore, the final number of early retirement and negotiated redundancies may be lower. The President of the Board of Estradas de Portugal reported that 280 workers over 55 years old already agreed to voluntary redundancy terms.

The reason given for the restructuring is the reduction of costs. The job losses have also been implemented through other measures; for example, about 20 workers will be relocated to other public organisations. However, these figures are not included in the announcement of staff reduction.
