Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Urmet, a leading IT company, is to close its plant in Turin, with the loss of 171 jobs by the end of September 2008. The company has taken this decision in order to reduce its operative costs to cope with increasing global competitors.
The trade unions are worried about the negative social effects that will affect the redundant workers; for this reason they have announced several industrial actions. The company operates in the telecommunications sector and has around 3,000 employees worldwide.
