Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The Nicoletti - one of the leading designers and manufacturers of upholstered furniture in the Matera industrial district– is to close, with the consequent loss of 480 jobs. The company has taken this decision after some years of financial problems, mainly due to the economic crisis affecting the Italian sofa industry.
The trade unions are demanding to meet the company’s representatives in order to find adequate measures for the redundant workers; moreover, the trade unions are worried about the negative impacts of lay-offs on the local network of small and medium firms that emerged and developed around the Nicoletti plant.
